We will follow these conventions in all of our software that supports the Bitcoin Cash block chain. Like Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash supports pay to public key hash p2pkh and pay to script hash p2sh addresses.

These addresses include a version byte. The version byte is set to 28 for p2pkh addresses and 40 for p2sh addresses. All BitPay software, including block explorers, will use these new address versions. Historical data extending back prior to the BCH fork will also be presented using these new conventions.

This means that in some circumstances when researching history of both BTC and BCH, it may be necessary to convert addresses between formats. To stop that from happening, we adopted new format conventions for addresses:.

Instead of the address starting with a 1 or a 3, we had Bitcoin Cash addresses start with a C. So far, this has prevented many Bitcoin Cash users from mistakenly sending to Bitcoin addresses. But since many other services and wallets do not use our address format, this can make it hard to use Bitcoin Cash outside of the BitPay and Copay wallets. It has been possible to translate between address formats , but this is not a simple fix for most users. Other groups in the Bitcoin Cash ecosystem have also been aware of the potential confusion caused by the legacy BCH address format.
